In 1997, during the Kyalami Grand Prix, there was a fatal accident involving a security marshal named Graham Beveridge, who was struck by a wheel that flew off Jacques Villeneuve’s car during a loose wheel incident. Beveridge, who was stationed on a raised platform near the side of the track, was hit by the wheel and thrown from the platform, falling to his death.
The incident led to widespread concerns about safety standards in Formula One and prompted the FIA to issue new regulations requiring teams to implement more rigorous wheel retention systems. Teams were also required to carry out regular safety checks on their cars, including inspections of the wheel nuts and hubs.
Despite the tragedy, the 1997 Kyalami Grand Prix continued, with Villeneuve’s teammate, Damon Hill, going on to win the race. The incident stands as a poignant reminder of the risks involved in any motorsport event and the importance of safety measures to protect both drivers and spectators alike.
